Which PR coverage does most for SEO and AI search?
It’s a question lots of our clients are asking. As ever, there isn’t one right answer.
Instead, it depends on the audience and what you want the business to be known for. And, in some cases, Tier One media outlet might not always be the right target.
Here’s how we assess the main types of coverage:
National media
Coverage in the FT, BBC or The Times builds credibility for your brand like nothing else. In visibility terms, links from these outlets carry the most authority - even ‘nofollow’ links, which don’t directly pass on search ranking credit. Simple brand mentions can also work very well. These outlets are the ones most cited by AI, most often picked up by journalists and the ones which will lift your brand searches. They’re also - obviously - the hardest to win.
Industry press
For B2B, industry titles can be the most commercially useful coverage. FT Adviser, Law360, FUNDFire, Money Marketing or TheHRDirector can reach precisely the buyers you want. One relevant trade article can beat ten unrelated regional mentions.
Comparison sites and “best X” lists
For software businesses, G2, Capterra and credible comparison pages deserve attention. Check which sources feature in AI answers to your buyers’ questions, then ensure relevant profiles accurately explain what your product does.
Regional coverage
Good for consumer brands, local employers and campaigns with a genuine regional angle. Syndication can extend reach, but twenty copies of one story represent a different achievement from twenty independently reported articles. View it as an addition to national coverage not a substitute.
Reddit and forums
It’s worth assessing whether your buyers use these sites, or if they feature in relevant AI answers. Participation needs to be genuine and transparent. A barely disguised sales pitch is unlikely to help and most b2b brands find Reddit’s environment near-impossible to navigate in a useful, compliant way.
Reddit is also changing how AI can use its content. It’s closing free access to its data by March 2027, so AI tools will need a paid deal to use it. Google and OpenAI already have deals, but both are up for renewal, so how often Reddit appears in AI answers could change.
Broadcast
TV and radio can build familiarity and give people a reason to search for your brand. There’s usually no link, so the direct SEO benefit is limited, but that doesn’t make an interview worthless. Judge it on who it reaches and what you want it to achieve.
Newswires
A useful distribution tool. Good for going far and wide to audiences and generating further coverage, and very useful if other journos pick up the story
Links do still matter: Google uses them to help determine relevance and discover pages. Publications are increasingly reluctant to give them to brands as they want the traffic (not unreasonably!). Unlinked mentions deserve attention too. Ahrefs research has found a strong correlation between branded web mentions and AI visibility. That supports examining your wider presence, while recognising that an individual mention doesn’t guarantee an uplift.
Marketing directors should track relevant referring domains, branded search trends, referral traffic and enquiries - plus undertake a quarterly AI visibility check using consistent buyer questions, repeated tests and competitor comparisons.
